A floor plan of the kitchen is essential for accurate planning.
Measure the kitchen from wall to wall and draw it up on a Layout Sheet – download here.

When measuring up, make sure to take into account anything that might get in the way of new cabinets.  If doors or windows are in your plan, measure to the outside edge of all frames and architraves.
